There is a new application!

aLittleBritain is a web app designed to run in a smartphone (any smartphone - iPhone, Android, Palm webOS,...) browser. It can also be used in a desktop/laptop browser. Try it at http://alittle.org.uk/britain.

This is a simple map app designed to test the idea of usable mobile apps running in the browser and saving the effort of developing a different version for each mobile platform (iPhone, Android, Palm webOS,...). And first indications are that it works well. The app serves as a demonstration as well as proof-of-concept and is intended as the basis of custom versions tailored to the specific requirements of individual companies or organisations. The efficient development process means special versions can be developed quickly to run on customers' own websites and using their own database, all for relatively trivial outlay. Please see it in the Application section, try it out, and get in touch (see Contact tab) if you think a special version may benefit your organisation.

The old free download with registration/donation model for mobile applications was not very satisfactory though download numbers were very high. So a new, straightforward, paid-for approach has being adopted. You can buy the Java phone apps from the Application section and aLittleMap is available in the Palm App Catalog. All at pocket-money prices. As soon as Sony-Ericsson and GetJar enable paid-for apps the Java phone apps will be available there.

KronoKarta is now out of the initial development and testing phase and is 'live' as a working (mostly) prototype. Recent improvements have made it much more responsive but also very fragile, with lots of new bugs coming out of the woodwork. You can try it out in the History section but please don't expect everything to work perfectly, though bugs are being stamped on at a rate alarming to animal rights activists or small children.

aLittleOrganisation: Welcome to a little website which attempts to bring a little organisation to some of my interests and activities. These are varied and often unconnected like different departments in a little organisation. Organisation is a better word than 'company' as much of the site is about sharing and informing rather than commerce.

aLittleApplication: Much of the content here is to do with applications: little apps (at little prices) for smartphones and mobile phones, and a new departure - mobile web apps for smartphones.

I have been developing software since the 1980s and websites since the mid 1990s and I now have a pretty good grasp of software and screen design, Java, Mobile Java, JavaScript, HTML, server-side PHP scripts and MySQL databases. I am keen to take on commercial work in these fields, particularly building purpose-designed web applications to meet customers' requirements. Recent trends such as smartphones and tablets, 'Web 2.0' and 'Cloud Computing' are opening up exciting possibilities and are making powerful, tailor-made solutions more affordable than ever.

aLittleArt/Architecture: Most of my working life has been in architecture and I have always drawn and painted. Galleries show a little of what I have done in these areas in the last twenty years or so.
